GLOSSARY

Below are listed some common terms used in archery.
A
Anchor Point - part of the face where the archer consistently pulls the bow string to
Arrow - the main projectile shot from a bow
Arrow rest - a device used to hold the arrow on the bow before shooting
Archer - a person who practices the art of archery

B
Bare Bow - using a bow without a sight or other aids
Boss - A target, usually made from tightly compacted straw or foam
Bow - weapon used for shooting arrows
Bow string - the string, which under tension gives the bow it’s power
Bracer - a protective guard worn on the forearm

C
Clicker - a device used to aid the archer in giving a consistent draw length
Cock feather - a differently coloured fletching to indicate the correct orientation of the arrow
Compound bow - a modern bow utilising pulleys and cables to give power

D
Drawing - the act of pulling back the arrow and string before shooting
Draw length - the distance the archer pulls back the bow string to reach the anchor point
Draw weight - the amount of tension in a fully drawn bow (usually measured in lbs at 28 inches)

E
End - each round of arrows shot

F
Field archery - a form of archery using a variety of target distances and shooting angles over a set      
                           course, usually in a woodland setting
Finger tab - a protective leather patch giving protection to the archer’s fingers when pulling the bow string
Fletching - stabilising fin on an arrow, traditionally made of feathers

K
Kisser - a device attached to the bow string to aid in consistent draw length

L
Limb - the detachable flexible part of a recurve bow
Longbow - traditional wooden bow
Long rod - long metal or carbon rod, part of stabilising system

N
Nock - the act of attaching the arrow to the bow string
Nock - slot at the end of an arrow for setting on the bow

P
Pile- metal point or tip of an arrow
Pressure button - a device used to neutralise the flex of an arrow as it leaves the bow

Q
Quiver - container for carrying arrows

R
Recurve bow - a type of bow where the tips bend away from the archer
Release aid - a mechanical trigger used to release a compound bow
Rest - part of the bow which the arrow rests on
Riser - the metal or carbon fibre handle part of a recurve bow

S
Shaft - the main body of an arrow
Sight - a device used on compound and recurve bows to aid aiming of arrows
Stabiliser - any metal or carbon fibre rod(s) attached to a bow to provide balance

T
Tab - more common name for a finger tab
Target - general term for anything an arrow is shot at
Target archery -  the type of archery practiced at Torquay Company of Archers, shooting at fixed targets at
                               set distances
